I. Average Weight Gain for full-term infants (based on WHO guidelines 2006)
0 – 3 months | 4 – 8 ounces / week (149 – 243 grams) |
3 – 6 months | 2.5 – 4.5 ounces / week (80 – 144 grams) |
6 – 9 months | 1.5 – 4 ounces / week (44 – 96 grams) |
9 – 12 months | 1 – 3 ounces / week (31 – 81 grams) |
II. Dr. Sears: How much weight will my breastfeeding baby gain?
- An average of 1-2 pounds (1/2 to 1 kilogram) per month for the first six months
- An average of one pound (1/2 kilogram) per month from six months to one year
III. La Leche League International states:
- Most babies tend to regain their birth weights within 10 days to 2 weeks.
- The more weight a baby looses initially after birth, the longer it will take for him / her to regain to birth weight.
